Materials needed:

  • DK weight cotton yarn in 4 colours:

    Main colour – Purse body

Brown, dark brown and yellow – for sunflower

  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Sewing pins
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Sewing thread and needle
  • Press button/ Magnetic button
  • Strong Adhesive Glue

Stitches/ Abbreviations

  • R – round/ row
  • MR – Magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • trc – triple crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • p – picot stitch
  • BLO – Back loops only
  • […] – repeat the instructions given in between the brackets
  • (…) – total number of stitches

Purse Body:

The purse body is worked in joined rounds. Each round begins with ch 1 (does not count as a stitch) and ends with a sl st joined to the first half double crochet of the round. Work the first stitch of each round into the same stitch as the ch 1.

Tip: Place a stitch marker in the first Hdc stitch at the beginning of each round. This will help you identify where to join at the end of the round and avoid confusion.

Purse instructions:

Using main colour,

R1: Ch 22. Starting in third chain from the hook, hdc 19, 3 hdc in last ch. Working along the opposite side of the foundation chain,  hdc 18, 2 hdc in last ch. Sl st to the first hdc (42).

R2: (BLO) Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first hdc (42).

R3-12: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to first hdc (42).

Fasten off and weave in the yarn end.

Sunflower flap:

Special Stitches used:

Picot (p): Ch 2, sl st in first ch made.

Pattern Instructions:

Note: For sunflower center, I have used ch 2 instead of the usual ch 3 for starting double crochet for a clean look.

Sunflower center:

Using dark brown yarn,

R1: Ch 2, 11 dc in MR. Sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to join (12).

R2: Ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around (24). Fasten off invisibly.

Switch to light brown yarn.

Join to the first st of previous round and,

R3: Ch 2, 2 dc in next st, [ dc in next, 2 dc in next st ] x 11.

Sl st to top of beginning ch-2 to join (36).

R4: Ch 2, 2 dc in next st, dc in next, [ dc in next, 2 dc in next, dc in next ] x 11 (48). Fasten off invisibly.

Petals:

Switch to yellow yarn,

Join Yellow yarn to the first stitch of last row using a sl st and,

[ Ch 2, (dc, trc) in next st, (trc, p, trc) in next st, (trc,dc) in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st ] x 12.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Assembling:

Now we’re going to sew the Sunflower flap to the purse.

Fold the sunflower flap in half and place it at the top of the purse. Adjust so the front of the purse is covered by 6-7 petals.

Pin the flap to the purse using sewing pins once you’re happy with the alignment.

Sew the flap to the purse using sewing thread or yarn.

Sew the remaining flap to the back of the purse. You can also use strong glue to attach it.

For closure, sew a press button or magnetic snap to the purse.

Finally, embellish your purse with tassels, charms or anything else you like and your crochet sunflower purse is now done!
